The Riddle (2007)
HE RIDDLE: Smart contemporary London mystery thriller with a Dickensian twist. When the London landlady of a Thames-side pub is murdered following her discovery of an unpublished Charles Dickens manuscript in her pub cellar, an unusual trio team up to investigate. Mike (Vinnie Jones) is an ambitious tabloid sports reporter determined to make a name for himself as an investigative journalist. He is helped by Kate, a police press officer (Julie Cox) and by an eccentric beach-combing tramp (Derek Jacobi) who stalks the Thames foreshore at low tide. Together they track down the manuscript and as they study it we are transported back into the world of Charles Dickens (also played by Derek Jacobi). Mike becomes obsessed with solving not just the modern murder, but also a century-old killing described in the pages of the long lost book. Only when they unlock the riddle of the manuscript are they able to solve the present-day crime, facing opposition along the way from a greedy detective (PH Moriarty), a self-important publisher (Vanessa Redgrave) and a ruthless construction company boss (Jason Flemyng).

Ta Promh - jungle temple
Here is a photo of the jungle temple showing the damage wrought by the mighty trees to the thousand year old temple. It is here that Angelina Jolie starred as Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider film, a more poerfect setting there could not be. She is famous here for having also adopted a Cambodian baby, srtarting a trend in celebrity adoptions.
A more perfect filmset there could not be, a pity Angkor was off-limits when they made the Indiana Jones films.

Buddhism
The founder of the Bagan Empire was King Anawrahta (A.D. 1044-1077). He broadened his domain from a small area in Central Myanmar until it spread beyond the present-day boundaries. It was he who introduced pure Theravada Buddhism to Upper Myanmar with the help of Shin Arahan, a learned monk from Suvanna Bhumi or Thaton in Lower Myanmar.
Urged by his spiritual adviser Shin Arahan, the king requested the Mon monarch Manuha of Suvannabhumi to kindly send him a set of the Pali Buddhist scriptures. Unfortunately the request was rudely turned down and Anawrahta waged a fierce war against the Mon king. He conquered Suvanna Bhumi chiefly to acquire Buddhist scriptures known as the three Pitakas or Baskets of Learning. Some thirty huge sets of the Pali Buddhist scriptures were carried along with prisoners including the Royal family. Fitting honor was extended to the scriptures which were housed with all solemnity at Bagan in a library specially built for the purpose.
After Anawrahta had brought over the Pali scriptures to Bagan, the study of the scripts coupled with the pressure put forth by Shin Arahan, encouraged the king to make Theravada Buddhism the religion of the state. His enthusiasm ushered an era of religious reform. Pagodas rose, a new programme of education was adopted, and the cause of culture was strongly encouraged and advocated. After the death of Anawrahta, Kyanzittha (1084-1113) followed the programme of reform.
According to the Shwesandaw inscription of the year 1093 Kyanzittha sent a mission to India to restore the temple at Buddhagaya, where Gautama had attained Enlightenment, an act which became the first official attempt on the part of a Myanmar king at establishing cultural contacts with India. Shin Arahan continued to be spiritual adviser of the king, and it was to him more than to anybody else that Myanmar owes the establishment of Theravada Buddhism, and the era of pagoda building which he inaugurated was the most creative age in Burmese religious and cultural history.

Bagan (Pagan) History
Bagan (Pagan) History Bagan is a plain in the middle of Myanmar, covering a tract of country measuring about 16 square miles along the east bank of the Ayeyarwaddy. The monuments which are now in all stages of decay were erected mostly from the 11th to 13th centuries A.D., when Bagan was the seat of the Myanmar dynasty. Tradition carried by the local chronicles, has it that a long line of fifty-five kings ruled over this kingdom during the twelve centuries.
King Pyinbya was the builder of the present-day Bagan city wall. King Pyinbya was the 34th king of the dynasty, who in 874 A.D. transferred the capital from Tampawaddy, now known as Pwasato. The latter was built by Thaiktaing, the 12th king, and there were two other capitals, namely, Thiripyitsaya' built by Thelegyaung, the 7th king and Paukkan built by Thamudrit, the founder of the dynasty in 108 A.D.
But the authentic history of the dynasty as supported by epigraphic evidence begins only with, the reign of Anawrahta (1044-77 A.D.). In 1057 Anawrahta conquered Thaton and brought back to his capital the Theravada scriptures in Pali, a large number of Buddhist monks, and artists and craftsmen of every description. From the Mon monks the Bagan people received their alphabet, religion and scriptures. It was from this momentous date that there began the extraordinary architectural and artistic activity which, in a little more than two centuries, covered the city and its environs with thousands of splendid monuments of every shape and size, the inner walls of most of which are decorated with incredible frescoes.
The square temples dominated by Mon influence are distinguished by their dark corridors which are dimly lighted by perforated windows and the bright frescoes of variegated colour with Mon writing on the walls. The typical Bagan Style temples are bright and airy within, with imposing plan and height. But there are also some temples with intermediate forms.
The end of the thirteenth century witnessed the fall of the Bagan dynasty. Thousands of pagodas were despoiled by the invaders and vandals and the king, who fled from the Chinese, is believed to have dismantled a considerable number of the monuments to collect materials for building forts. Since then the great mass of the religious edifices were left to decay and ruin and today we see no more than a hundred splendid monuments which attract and retain attention and since their foundation, have remained as places of worship.
